Compost Efforts for a Greener Community
We are raising funds for a large Compost Area at Serenity, can you help us?
Thanks to Patricia, our farm is already quite 'green' (envoronmentally friendly). We use solar power for electric fences, and we do not use chemicals on plants and landscape. We also do a lot to reduce our waste, electricity and soil erosion. But as you can guess, horses produce a lot of poo. Especially since we pick our outdoor paddocks/pastures to keep them clear of manure, in addition to stalls (by keeping paddocks and pastures so clean, we reduce the insects and that helps us avoid using chemical fly sprays).
Manure/Compost from our current pile is available now. Contact us to set up a time to get some (or come out on Saturdays between 9am and noon) .
Currently we manage our poo pile by covering areas and turning regularly but we would like to set up a better (and better-looking!) system for ongoing manure management.
That's where you come in - we need to build a large compost area with 3 giant bins that we can rotate and turn manure in, to produce wonderful organic compost for local gardeners. It's a win win, supporters get compost and we get to reduce waste (and space).
We estimate that this project will cost about $4,000- we need large cement blocks to build the walls and transporting those is costly. We are working with local eco-block suppliers and contractors to determine the most cost-effective way to set this important area up.
